Judges comments, provided by Wendy Sharpe, Ted Snell, and Victoria Laurie:
It was decided that the winning portrait had an immediacy, a freshness and a boldness that stood out. Its honest and simple treatment tells you a lot about the character. It is a gripping image with no superfluous elements and is highly appropriate to the character that this artist is trying to portray.
Lisa Axiotis, Perspicacious – “winners and losers” actress Melissa Bergland
Judges comments, provided by Wendy Sharpe, Ted Snell, and Victoria Laurie:
It was very difficult to choose a winner between the highly commended and the winning artwork, as both were very highly regarded.
The Highly Commended portrait is unabashedly slick and sophisticated, bold and brash even. Highly skilled in its technical ability but coming together as a powerful composite portrait of this brash young woman. There is a wonderful range of marks and textures to intensify the character in this work, and it utilises the language of advertising appropriate to the subject.
Andy Quilty, Bastian Jerald Lean – Mugshot (diptych)
Liz Stute, Madame butterflies
Jacqui Grantford, Complex simplicity
Judges comments, provided by Wendy Sharpe, Ted Snell, and Victoria Laurie:
Both the paintings that we commended showed a command of the medium and each was able to provide a sense of discovery through their encounter with their sitter. As an audience we are then engaging with that person through the artists’ eyes.
