THE LESTER PRIZE 2020 OUTDOOR EXHIBITION
A digitally printed exhibition of the 2020 Salon des Refusés (Semi-Finalists) and Youth Awards Finalists’ on 2.4m outdoor exhibition boxes.
These artworks were selected by The Lester Prize Pre-Selection Panel from over 1,000 combined Main Awards and Youth Awards entries representing some of Australia’s most talented established, emerging and aspiring artists.
The idea of the Salon des Refusés originated in Paris in the nineteenth century when works by avant-garde artists were not accepted into exhibitions organised by the establishment. This led to artists mounting their own exhibitions, where they achieved great success.
The Lester Prize initiated the Salon as part of our Exhibition Season in response to the high number of entries submitted to the Prize that were not selected as finalists for the Main Awards at Art Gallery WA. This alternative collection of works are selected for their quality, diversity, or exciting or witty approach to portraiture.
The Lester Prize 2020 Semi-Finalists selected from across Australia have been given an opportunity to showcase their work in a similar spirit in this Outdoor Exhibition. As a result, members of the public can experience the full variety of works submitted, and the talents of the artists who submitted them.
